What is a sales funnel anyway?
Imagine a physical funnel. At the top it is very wide, at the bottom very narrow. In marketing, this means:
- Oben (Top of Funnel - ToFu): Viele Menschen sehen Ihre Werbung oder finden Ihre Website auf Google.
- Mitte (Middle of Funnel - MoFu): Einige davon interessieren sich und hinterlassen ihre E-Mail-Adresse fรผr einen echten Mehrwert (Lead Magnet).
- Unten (Bottom of Funnel - BoFu): A fraction of them end up booking an initial consultation or buying your product.
A sales funnel is therefore nothing more than a systematic process that turns complete strangers into paying customers through a series of logical steps.
Why "normal" websites often fail
The typical SME website looks like this: Home page, About us, Services, Contact form. The visitor comes to the site, reads through a bit, thinks about it, gets distracted by a screaming child or the boss โ and closes the tab. Gone. Forever.
A funnel changes that. It doesn't ask for "marriage" immediately (the purchase or the contact form), but instead asks for a "date" first (the email address in exchange for a PDF, a webinar, or a checklist). Once you have the contact details, you can automatically "warm up" the visitor via e-mail (nurturing) until they are ready to buy.
The 3 phases of a working funnel
1. Lead Magnet (The Bait)
Nobody signs up for a boring "newsletter" anymore today. You have to offer something of real value. Examples:
- A tax advisor offers a "Checklist: 10 things you can deduct in your tax return".
- A fitness trainer offers a "3-day plan against back pain in the home office".
- An IT support worker offers the "Security audit template for SMEs".
The goal: Keep the barrier to entry as low as possible. The exchange "e-mail against checklist" must be an absolute no-brainer for the user.
2. The Landing Page
The lead magnet has no place on a generic subpage with 20 other links. It needs its own specialized page (landing page). This page has only one goal: to get the visitor to download the lead magnet.
Rule: There is no top or bottom navigation on a landing page. Only the button to subscribe. Whoever wants to break out has to close the tab.
3. The Email Follow-Up Sequence
Now the user has the checklist. And now the actual automation begins (e.g. with ActiveCampaign or HubSpot):
- Day 1: The checklist is delivered. A warm "Hello" and the question of what he is currently stuck on most.
- Day 3: A value-add tip. No sale. Just pure added value that builds trust.
- Day 5: A case study ("How customer XY saved 30% taxes with this method").
- Day 7: The pitch: "Would you like us to implement this together for your company? Book a short initial consultation here."
You write this sequence once. After that it runs completely automatically, day and night, for every new lead that enters the funnel.
Which software do I need?
Don't overcomplicate it. You don't need expensive enterprise software for โฌ2,000 a month. For the start (or even advanced setups) I often recommend:
- For the funnel pages: Custom HTML/JS or an efficient landing page software.
- For email marketing: ActiveCampaign or Brevo (formerly Sendinblue).
- For booking appointments (Bottom of Funnel): Calendly.
- To link the tools (if necessary): Zapier or Make.
What is important is not the tool, but the strategy and the copy (the written text) on the pages and in the emails.
Conclusion: Act before the competition does
A funnel is not hype, but quite simply the digitized form of common sense in sales: First you build trust, show your expertise, and then you offer your service.
Funnels take time to build, but once they are running, they are the most reliable channel for predictable customer inquiries an SME can have.
